Edward Gane

Professor of Medicine

Dr. Gane is Professor of Medicine at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, Hepatologist and Deputy Director of the New Zealand Liver Unit at Auckland City Hospital. Dr. Gane trained in hepatology and liver transplantation at the King’s College Institute of Liver Studies, London where he completed his doctoral thesis on pathogenesis of hepatitis C. He was the lead investigator in the global CMV prophylaxis study which led t approval of oral ganciclovir in solid organ transplantation. In 1998, Dr Gane returned to New Zealand to set up the first national liver transplant unit. In 2007, Dr Gane opened a dedicated Phase I research centre (Auckland Clinical Studies, now New Zealand Clinical Research) which helped develop the first oral cure for hepatitis C and is now focused on developing finite cure for hepatitis B. Dr Gane has published almost 500 papers and has received many research awards including the Health Research Council Beaven and Liley Medals. He was awarded Member of the Order of New Zealand for Services to Medicine and New Zealand Innovator of the Year for his work towards HepC elimination in New Zealand.
